It is no secret that the web browser developed by Google is known to be one of the most widely used web browsers in the world and for a very good reason. Google Chrome is also known for always trying and planning out new updates for its users just like every other app developed by Google. All these new updates are developed in order to offer a considerably convenient and easier experience to its users. In fact, this year also Google released a similar update as the new version of Chrome known as ‘Chrome 88’.

Google had introduced tab groups feature for its desktop version of Google Chrome a while ago and it has received positive feedback since then. This feature came as a boon to everyone who hated a cluttered desktop even if it was due to multiple open tabs. It also assisted people who could not help themselves from making chaos while keeping a number of tabs open. Because of the user-friendly nature of this app, it was tested for use on Android in 2019, and after the successful testing, it will be rolling out on Android mobile phones as well. This software update will also introduce a grid tab switcher to the Chrome application.

How to Access The New Grid Layout

This new feature will be available on all the Android devices that have installed the latest software update and are using the latest version of Google Chrome. In any case, if the users are still unable to access the new updated version of the Google Chrome, then they have the option to access it manually by going to this address, ‘chrome://flags/#enable-tab-grid-layout’ in a browser tab. Henceforth, users will need to restart this app twice in order to enable the new layout in their device.

Grouping the different tabs together

After accessing and enabling the new layout on their Android devices, users will be able to drag the different tabs and place them over each other in order to create a group, just like how users can place different apps on top of each other in order to create a group on the home screens of an Android device.

Steps to group the tabs together

  • Open the Google Chrome app
  • Open all the tabs that you want to group
  • Drag one tab over the other one in order to group them
  • Users can also click on the three-dot icon and select ‘Group Tabs’ option
  • Users can further select all the tabs they want in a group

How to disable the new layout

If by some chance, you are one of those users who don’t really feel the need of this feature or who have a habit of closing every tab after accessing the needed information, then worry not as this feature can be easily disabled with a few simple and easy steps or you can just choose not to group your tabs together.

This new software update offered by Google Chromes will allow the people to manage their work and access the web browser in a more efficient way and also assist the users by saving time due to a more organised layout. The new layout also provides a switch option at the top of the screen to use grid view which basically means that this view will not allow the Incognito tabs to appear next to the regular tabs.

This grid view feature has already been introduced on iOS devices for a while now. However, in the case of Android users, Chrome 88 is available to everyone who has recently updated their devices whereas others are using this feature through a side-server. This feature will be soon available to every Chrome user around the world.
