If there is one app that came out as a winner during the Covid-19 pandemic, then it has to be the video conferencing app ‘Zoom’. When the entire world went in a lockdown and everything had to be shifted to an online portal, workspaces encountered a new issue. The issue was how to organise an online work meeting with everyone in the team when the numbers of team members were considerably large. That was when Zoom became a saving grace for everyone out there with its ability to arrange a video conference with a considerably large group.

With its rise in popularity, the Zoom app also worked harder for developing the required features in order to make the app, even more, user friendly. And it’s the latest effort has resulted in a feature called “Studio Effects”. This feature enables the people to add a number of facial features like eyebrows, facial hair and even lip colour while they are live on Zoom. As per The Verge, this particular feature is not really new to the app as Zoom made an announcement regarding the introduction of this feature for Windows and macOS in September 2020 but this is surprisingly the first time that Zoom users took notice of this feature.

This feature that basically lets the users add beard, moustache, eyebrows and lip colours to their faces while they are on a video call is still in its beta version despite being introduced last year in September. Additionally, this feature is also being made available for more people which also seems to be a factor for its rising popularity. These facial effects allow users to choose from a variety of colours, from purple to light brown. Moreover, the effect that people use can also be saved as a default for their future meetings.

Steps to Use This Zoom Studio Effect

  • Open the Zoom app on your device and go on a call.
  • Click on the “^” sign shown next to the Stop Video button.
  • Further, choose Video Settings.
  • Choose Backgrounds & Filters from the Settings menu.
  • Select ‘Studio Effects’ present at the bottom-right of the pop-up window.
  • Users may be asked to download the effects package first.
  • After the users download the package, it will be available to use for them.

After the download is complete, users can browse through various effects available to them. They can decide to choose from various styles of moustache, eyebrows, beard, and lip colours. This effect also allows the users to alter the opacity of the effect as per their preference. They can also choose from the pre-existing colour palette or choose a completely new colour as per their wish. Lastly, users will have the option of saving this effect as a default for their future meetings. However, this can prove to be risky if the users operate Zoom for professional purposes.

Even though this feature is already widely popular, it has not been released to mobile phones yet. One of the plausible reasons for this could be the fact that this feature is still in its beta version and hasn’t been made accessible for all of its users as of yet. For now, Zoom Studio Effects is only available for the Desktop app. On the other hand, Zoom is urging its users to send their feedback about this feature to their official id, beta@zoom.us.

Zoom also stated in its blog, “We believe that people connect better on video, but feeling connected when working from home is still challenging. The casual and fun elements that bring us together in the office seem to be missing from virtual meeting culture … until now.”
